From Finland to the US: The Story Behind Concria's Patented Flooring Technology

27 years of concrete expertise, 7 patents, and a 30% stake from the world's largest concrete admixture company. How Concria went from a Finnish startup to a global flooring innovator.

From Finland to the US: The Story Behind Concria's Patented Flooring Technology

Mika Ahonen has spent 27 years in concrete flooring. He's worked on projects across five continents. He holds 7 patents in concrete flooring technology. And he started Concria with a question that nobody in the industry seemed to be asking:

Why does finishing a concrete floor require so many products, so many return visits, and so many compromises?

The Problem That Started Everything

In traditional concrete construction, the slab is poured and finished. Then the flooring work begins — and it's a parade of separate products and contractors:

Day 1: Pour the concrete. Day 28: Come back and apply liquid hardener. Day 30: Apply curing compound. Day 35: Maybe apply a sealer. Day 60+: If it's a coated floor, prep and apply epoxy.

Each step requires scheduling, coordination, and additional materials. Each step adds cost. And each step is another opportunity for something to go wrong — delamination, color inconsistency, bonding failures.

Mika's insight was that all of these steps could be collapsed into the initial concrete placement if you engineered the right products for that specific moment.

The Patented Solution

Concria's Optimal Slab system works on a fundamentally different principle than traditional dry-shake hardeners. Instead of a single broadcast application of 0.6-1 lbs/sqft, Optimal Slab is applied in 2-4 layers totaling up to 2 lbs/sqft.

This multi-layer method is patented. It achieves several things that a single-layer application cannot:

  • Complete, uniform coverage regardless of bleed water conditions
  • Fiber encapsulation that hides steel and synthetic fibers
  • Consistent color even in challenging environmental conditions
  • Compatibility with low-carbon Type 1L cements that cause traditional products to fail
The second innovation is Trowel Hard — a nano-silica densifier applied during power troweling. Unlike sodium or lithium silicates that are applied weeks after curing and only penetrate the top 1-3mm, Trowel Hard penetrates the full slab depth and reacts with cement (not just lime) for a complete reaction.

Together, the system delivers a floor that is hardened, densified, and cured in a single visit. No return trips. No additional products. No coatings.

Sika AG Validates the Technology

In 2023, Sika AG — the world's largest concrete admixture company — acquired a 30% strategic stake in Concria Oy.

Sika evaluates hundreds of concrete technology companies globally. They chose to invest in Concria. That decision came after rigorous technical due diligence, field testing, and market analysis. When the world's largest concrete company puts capital behind your technology, it says something.

The partnership provides Concria with access to Sika's global distribution network, R&D resources, and technical expertise. It also provides independent validation at the highest level of industry scrutiny.

The Numbers

The Concria system has been proven at scale:

  • 15+ million sqft installed annually across Europe and Asia
  • 581,000 sqft single-project installation (Netherlands distribution center)
  • 10,800 PSI compressive strength
  • ASTM AR 0.5 abrasion resistance — the highest rating
  • 50+ year projected lifespan with polish-only maintenance
  • 7-day polish readiness (vs 28 days traditional)
  • 80% faster installation than traditional flooring methods

Now in the United States

Concria launched US operations through CCS, providing nationwide availability of Optimal Slab and Trowel Hard products. American concrete contractors now have access to the same technology that's been proven on millions of square feet in Europe.

The US market represents a massive opportunity — data centers, warehouses, grocery chains, and manufacturing facilities are all looking for flooring solutions that last longer, install faster, and cost less over their lifecycle.

Whether you're specifying a 500,000 sqft data center or a 5,000 sqft retail showroom, Concria is here.
